New improved Bio Balls

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Not crazy about them as it doesn't look like they have good flo-thru. May be ok for a slow flowing filter.

Pre-filter the heck out of the water prior to exposing this new material and thro the whole bag in the washer (no soap) every six months :D

If you really want to improve bio-balls (these you would have to remove the sponges first), thro them in a clean cement mixer the some blasting sand to ruff up the surfaces (tumbling times vary with material).

Awaiting your findings.

They look like a place for high maintenance cleaning waiting to happen. Everybody knows how foam plugs up, then you'll have to split them open, IF you can (glued?) and clean each of those little foam centers?

Seem kinda sketchy to me.

Just a gimmick. Simple is better. Like those stupid bio-balls with the carbon inside! What are you supposed to do, take every bio-ball apart every couple of months, clean them and replace the media inside? Forget that crap.

lets us know if they plug up in 6 months or are self cleaning
I would think that would depend mostly on the pre filter wouldnt it ?

:WHOA: This is why I run everything by you MFKers lol

I understand what John is on about but with a foam prefilter using different sizes I am sure a quick rinse of the bag is all that may be needed.
I am putting together two 55g wet/ dry sumps at the momment and wish to follow Justin Guest's advice and mix up the bio media I use in the main chamber.
I am thinking scrubbies, bio balls, sintered glass and possibly foam cubes which he thinks is under rated and recommends. I am going to throw in some Aquaclay also because I have alot at the momment.
I will post the sumps for approval because I want to use them on my new 8x4x2 monster tank.
