I understand what John is on about but with a foam prefilter using different sizes I am sure a quick rinse of the bag is all that may be needed.
I am putting together two 55g wet/ dry sumps at the momment and wish to follow Justin Guest's advice and mix up the bio media I use in the main chamber.
I am thinking scrubbies, bio balls, sintered glass and possibly foam cubes which he thinks is under rated and recommends. I am going to throw in some Aquaclay also because I have alot at the momment.
I will post the sumps for approval because I want to use them on my new 8x4x2 monster tank.

here is what i am implying

BB grows on the bio balls in 100% pre filtered water.

old BB cell die on the bio balls and make slime from dead cells

will the slime from the dead BB wash off like in a traditional spiked bio ball or will it make a mess and required cleaning which will kill most of the living BB attached to the media ????

I just found the thread.

Like most everyone else, I'm fairly skeptical of the design and especially the sales pitch.

[FONT=Arial, verdana]The balls encourage formation of natural bacteria and microbes and acts as an ion-exchanger and catalytic converter

If ya can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle 'em with BS.

The ball structure stores excessive nutrients and decaying products in microscopic pores

There's the answer if they are self cleaning or not.

Ideal for use with Hydro Prime external filter or percolators for fresh water or marine aquariums

[FONT=Arial,verdana]
No 'dead' areas in filter for maximum biological efficiency

[FONT=Arial, verdana]Easy to clean by rinsing in a bowl of aquarium water (not under tap) and easy to replace or combine different media for better result on harmonizing micro-ecosystem

Extremely durable; can use for 10+years (or six months...which ever comes faster)

Lotsa lip service. But that is the Sales world for ya.

I accept your great advice John and Chompers, that if it sounds too good to be true it probably is.
I haven't heard back from the person about my order inquiry so I think I'll just leave it and opt for regular bio balls.
They are cheaper also.
That's why MFK is so great you can vet ideas and get expert friendly advice.
