new irwini!-)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm pretty certain mine was an irwini , looks a lot slimmer than the litho's in pics and the only spots he had on him were underneath , guess I'll never know either way I am still gutted I lost this fish :banghead: managed to find another PIC for better reference if it helps
Lovely. Let me post it on PCF? I continue to have my doubts.

Yeah go for it mate if you can get a positive id on pcf , thanks :)

hi all, anyone who read my tank burst thread will already know i aquired an irwini with the new tank, the owners didnt even know what it was! heres a few pics, he is about 8-9 inch.
got some nice colours i think considering the tank was yellow, overstocked, and all had finrot!

Damn dude, sorry to hear about the tank I'm going to have to get over to that thread as I'm curious as to how it happened. I'm glad you where able to get a new tank though as well as pick up that little gem, the Irwini/Uranscopas colors are hella sweet! I picked up a Irwini last month around 7-8 inches, my Centrodoras didn't appreciate that though and definned as well as dewhiskered him; so mine is looking more raggedy then yours. Had to move the Mega/Irwini to a tank where I've got some Ptychromis and Electric Blue Acara I'm attempting to grow out and breed. Maybe we can have a Mega growth race. :grinno:

Very pretty yellow on your irwini, Justin!

Mate, I am having doubts the fish in these pics is an irwini. Looks much closer to my eye to be a Lithodoras dorsalis: http://www.planetcatfish.com/common/species.php?species_id=443 - these have such a regular coloration and more plates. Irwini most usually is blotchy. If it is a litho, that's far more rare. Very rare.
I know you have had Lithos before and I can see what you're talking about, Evz "Irwini" around the head has such well defined armor that it looks like a Litho but I'd still render a guess at it being a Iriwini rather then the Litho. Mostly because of the under body spots which I think is a defining difference between them and most other large Doradidae. Litho's seem to have like my Centrodoras a uniform colored belly and the Irwini has a more semi lunar tail fin while the Lithos are more forked ending in a sharp defined V. Just my opinion from what I've gathered from pics so it should definitely be taken with a grain of salt.

Sorry for the loss of the Irwini it was a awesome looking specimen.

Looks like you are right, Kolt. Dr. Ng thinks it is a Megalodoras. I was hesitant too because it is mostly just the base coloration and the bony plate coloration that was usual for Evz's irwini. The body and head shape looked kind of wrong for a litho.

Sorry for muddling up the waters...

I'll wait to see what else precipitates out of the PCF thread.

Thanks for the help :)
All I can say is it was one if the best cats I've owned once it started coming out feeding , im really gutted to have lost it last year or it could have been an absoloute beast of a fish :( oh well the fishkeeping goes on

lol dont worry kolt it was only my 35g that leaked, my fault... i was forcing a tight egg crate divider in and split the silicone in the back corner, repairable and no major problem!-) sounds rough for your little guy, still waiting what seems like an age for my 17 inch wyckii to grow half a whisker back!

cheers im really happy with the little guy, if any fish can do the long haul with a wyckii its an irwini surely! the race is on btw, i will get an accurate measurement the weekend!-) could start an irwini race thread, sound good, something a little different!?

evz, thought you had another irwini to grow out no?

Dr. Ng is Silurus? If so did you explain to him why you thought it might be a Litho? If Silurus is Dr.Ng then maybe he just gave it a quick glance because of it's coloration and lack of reason posted in the thread as to why you thought it might be a Litho. Perhaps if you mention the characteristics you saw that evoked the possible Litho identification for you he might take a better look and see the same.

Not that I don't want to be right, I love being right but I just figured it might be worth further explanation so a more definitive I.D. can be reached.

Glad to hear it was only a 35, gotta say I'm surprised that the egg crate didn't give before the silicone. Was there water in the tank when it happened? I mean even so I'm still surprised, guess that's a lesson learned for you and me as I've used egg crate plenty of times guess I'll have to be more mindful of how hard I try to force one in from now on.

I hope your right, I mean honestly you've pulled off a stunning comm. in my opinion so if anyone can house a Irwini with a Wyckii it's you.

I was thinking the same thing, having a race off in a thread sounds like a pretty cool idea for a thread to me. We can call it the Mega Growth Thread or somethin' clever like that, I want to work Mega in the title some how if that's cool. Mind if I include my Centrodoras as well in it? If he's in it I'll have a better chance of winning. :grinno: He's definitely about 10 inches while the Irwini I'll have to check just like you to see his actual size. The Irwini was sold to me as a 10 inch specimen but I'm eye ballin' him I'd say at max he's 8 inches. We could also ask other Irwini owners on MFK to join as well as post pictures this way we can see the different variety in the species and see if there is a difference in growth rate between the different varieties.

Yeah that sounds awesome, some of the not so monster catfish need promoting to steer newbies away from rtc and tsn for their 100-200g tanks lol..

Mega cat race, whos irwinning lol. .. maybe a bit cheesy that one ha ha...
