how do i sex my new jack dempseys? i went and bought them today and got a brighter almost goldish one and an almost black one. these are my fist JD so i am not 100% sure on how to sex them. if necessary i will post pics in a bit

Females have less spangling and have more blue on their gill plate, as males have more spangling and less color on their gill plate.

spangling would be? like glitter or color? basically see which on has a large amount of blue on gill plate and whice one doesn't have that much

yeah, colored patterns/markings.

If you still unsure, you could always just post pics and we can tell you.

depending on where u got them and the bloodline of the fish jds can be very hard to sex.. only things i have ever seen to be true on every fish is venting and females have more mass than a male the same size (they have to hold eggs)

pics help, yup . . . some things I've become aware of are:

> females tend to have more solid blue on their gills
> males may have blue on the gills, but it will be spangles, not solid

> females tend to have more elongated shapes
> males are more big-bodied, rounder

see this is why i say venting is the only for sure way because my female was much stockier than my male was and i know they were a pair as i had them breed a few times before i got rid of them.. both my jd's were 12" measured and the female was probly a 1/4" wider than the male.
