It's usually dependent on an attentive eye, but generally if the fish is big enough; you flip them over, have a close look (or pic), male has more of a pointed organ, females tends to be a rounded tube. Probably not the best way to describe it, but it would give you a sure answer

IMHO at 9" you have a female. be no mistaking a jag of that size, IMHO.
