New kelberi's, how long before i should give in to feeders?

i use hikari frozen blood worms the other brands dont do it for me.
 
I guess they just needed to get comfy! They're taking the bloodworms now. =D Now hopefully they can keep up with the azuls growths.

I would give them what they want. You can give them a couple days, though before deciding to give them live. It took my kels a couple days before they would eat. I wouldn't worry too much about the piquiti going back to live as long as you keep giving them dead foods. I still give my piquiti and kelberi live every once in a while even though they are on dead foods.

Thats awesome. You guys are lucky. My Kelberi won't eat the frozen bloodworms. They pick at them, but mostly spit them back out. Then after about 5 mins of it, the get bored and move on.

Guppies on the other hand, that is a different story. lol. So the group of 5 Kelberi I got last Tues polished off approx 150 guppies ($10) in about a 5-5.5 day span. Damn, its gonna get expensive, especially since they are only 2". lol.

Hahah nice but guess what it's only the begining!!!!!!

I feed all the above items on a regular basis. I do feel that small Cichla need live to thrive. As they hit the 6'' mark is when I would start feeding other options such as frozen Fish/Silversides/Pellet's. If you don't want to feed Live then try some shrimp/tilapia/scallops/mussels cut up of course. GL with the challange ahead of you.

Haha.. well said. Thanks! :) Yeah, I agree with you. I've gotten my large cichla off live a while ago, so they are all on pellets and market shrimp. As for the tiny cichlas - its been a while for me, so I forgot how fast they go through live food. lol. But its fun to watch them hunt. lol.

Yipp-e: $2 for each guppy? Man - thats a big chuck out of the paycheck, esp. the way cichla eat. hehe. You are definately a committed hobbyist. :)
 
IMO,if you dont feed em what they want,then why keep them?
baby cichla should be on feeders to bulk them up.
of course there are many,including myself,who'd prefer feeding prepared foods.
but is it really better for the fish?

My dogs want steak but I'm not going to give them it =P I just don't like the risk of desease and personally just prefer prepared foods over guppies and feeders. Just a personal preference. The occasional feeder as a treat is going to be there, but I don't want that being their staple diet.
