Nice retro! Looks very similar to mine! Mine also has that dark "green" upper side! Just wunderful!
I have also seen much more lighter colored retros.
There must be variations depending on the habitat.
It is also difficult to tell if it is a retropinnis retropinnis or a retropinnis lowei. There is not enough Picture-Material to compare with...
I think the retropinnisspecies have not entirely been described correctly yet

I doubt that! It might be only one decribed, but i am pretty sure, that this will be changed again!

I wish that were true, but I checked those out, the big ones and the little ones, and they're not retropinnis, they are palmas polli. Look similar when skinny, but the spots are smaller and extend up to the head on retro.

You may be correct, can you find some photos that show this difference you're talking about? I've seen pics of the light colored (almost purple) retros, but that's because of the tank environment, either bare bottom, white sand, etc.. or they were newly introduced and extremely stressed.
Not saying it's impossible that there is another subspecies, but unlikely.

Thank you brutha, just wait till it's bigger, they look even nicer, not sure if you ever saw the pics of my 12" one I had. she was at that time, my favorite bichir, but lost her to a tragic accident.

Thanks, I wish the one in my avatar was mine lol it's just a pic I found on the net of a high contrast moke. My moke doesn't have much contrast and is usually a dark color:
