Hello all, I am new to this site, and thought I would join for some advise on a Pirahna project I would like to start…

It has been nearly two years since I have owned an aquarium, I lost the last one when I moved house as I left it at my parents, and they accidentally chipped the corner of the tank, although it did not break, I could not trust it with all that water!!! Since then I moved onto keeping a corn snake, which is fun and doing fine.

Now I am buying a 2nd hand Juwel curved front tank, which is large, but I am unsure of exact dimensions until I collect tonight, I’ve seen it before and have been trying to buy it for a while now, finally we decided on £150 including stand, which I think is a bargain, since he paid approx £500 + nearly two years ago!!!

Anyhow, back to why I’m here…. I will be cleaning the tank out and setting it up over the next few weeks ready for approx 6 - 8 ish RBP’s, I have read a little over last few days about what set up is best, some a little controversial and some the same... I believe from past experience most set ups are trial and error and personal prefs, but advise from others with experience is also very helpful.

I have read that a dark setup is better for the RBP’s something to do with reflections and more like their natural environment etc…

I am planning something along the lines as follows,

Dark grey or Black Substrate, Sand or fine gravel
Tall live plants, from bottom to top along the back (do plants last long? Any in particular better)
A couple of large logs, soaked in hot water, (is there any particular method of cleaning these?)
And a few short plants scattered around the front

My main question that I really do not know about is lighting are you allowed / can you get coloured bulbs, I’m thinking red in particular. This tank has two tube lights, if red seems two dark, maybe one red and one low wattage white. What are your thoughts on this? I have no idea???

Thanks for you time, and look forward to some good chat on here in future…!

Thanks
Marc

Sounds like it would work, but you may want to stick with fake plants. If you want to keep the tank dark, the live plants wont survive.

Also WELCOME!

Oh yeah of course... good point, I didn't think of that! Well in my recent reading of various sites, I've heard that a darkish tank is good for RBP's and I've also heard that live plants are better too..!

Perhaps my idea of one red one white (but not such low wattage) would be better, I just fancy a bit of a red colour to the tank for personal pref, it would go well in my lounge!!! lol tart!

Thanks for advise

Marc

It would be better to have a darker tank than to have some live plants. They don't like bright lights. I have 3 rbp's and I never turn their light on, just use sun light that comes through the window (not direct light).

Ok thanks JD_MAN I will bear that in mind... any thoughts on red light though... I have not read anything about coloured bulbs so have no idea!

Its a pity though because I do prefer live plants over plastic ones... my lounge is quite light during the day as I have patio doors the tank will be in the far corner so not in direct sunlight, what I may do is put live plants in there for now while setting up and leave the light off and see how it goes, as it will prob be a good 4-6 weeks before I add the RBP's.

Will they rip live plants to pieces???

Thanks
Marc

I think the plants will just die. You could try java fern or some other low light plant....but without light those will die as well.

OK.. I'll try and find some realistic looking fake plants... or could I have no plants?? and just some bigger log / stone ornaments? I'll definatly go for a stone look 3d backround this time.

are at least some live plants not fairly essentual for the cycle of the tank?

Thanks
marc

You dont need plants to cycle the tank. And if you dont want to put any in there i think you will be fine with the wood/rocks as long as their vision is broken up from one end of the tank to the other....which isnt always necessary either/
