haha well i appreciate it. and those tarpon seemed pretty cool. not as mean lookin as payara or atf but still cool. im not too familiar with them. i know they get big tho i just dont know how quick. but if king attacks any more of ur fish leme know :p as long as they rnt missing a tail or somethin id probably be able to make a home for them.

well the mid sized one took his first pellet this morning. he was watching the barbs eat them then snatched up a big chunk that was floating by. i figured having a misshapen pupil was a bit of a handicap for him so hed be the most willing to try new things. now hopefully tomorrow the small one will join in. im suprised how fast he took pellets but maybe coming into a new tank he didnt know what to expect for food. also im starting to think the mid sized one is female. its tail isnt the bright red its more of an orange colour and its much thicker for its length compared to the big guy. anyone know how to tell male/female for gatf?

GATF aren't sexually dimorphic. The extra girth could be caused by any number of things. Different growth rate, might eat more, kept in lower current, it's just fat. Females get larger and thicker when they're grown, yes, but with as young and small as these fish are it wouldn't make a difference.

The only way to tell if a GATF is male or female for sure is to dissect the fish. Another way to tell, but it is FAR from a perfect method, is to look at the fin rays on the anal fin. Males SOMETIMES have elongated second and third rays, which means that the first ray on the anal fin will NOT be the longest. Obviously though, if the fish's fin got damaged this way of identification could be ruined.

im gonna take a look now and see if i can tell by that method. the ones snout just looks quite a bit different from the other 2. its just as thick as the big one but not as long. and the little one has a thin long snout for its size just as the big one does. but i guess all fish look different.

Exactly. Its just individual variation between fish.

Good luck getting a look at the anal fins of the fish. It would be useful in assigning a gender specific pronoun to each fish, but I wish to emphasize that you can't know for sure without dissection. :)

by pronoun u mean name? :p and with males is the 1st fin ray much shorter? like the 1st ray is only about 1/3 the length? or does the curve in it just make the 1st one look thicker at the base until the curve? the mid sized one was beaten up so i dont want to go by that method with him but the other 2 are real healthy. the biggest one especially looks as if the 2nd and 3rd are longer. but again it could just be the way im looking at it. i wish i could wait until its sleeping and just cut the membrane to figure it out.

I'm just parroting what I've read in studies. The texts weren't any more specific than what I wrote here. It was made clear that there was a correlation between ray length and gender, but it wasn't set in stone to the point that the fish could be considered dimorphic.

Also, a gender specific pronoun is he, she, his, hers, etc.
