when it comes to "mixing up" pikes there's lots of things to mix them up with, you have the Boullengera charachins from SA, pike chiclids, and odoe as previously mentioned as well as true gars and certain other obscure african characins you're not likely to stumble onto in a petstore and the luciocephalus genus of gourami... its as if the long thin ambush predator is a successful niche the world over or something!

tropical fish and NA fish don't necessarily mix. NA species enjoy a cool down period in the winter.

lol I forgot how they can get confused sometimes.....As stated, the Pike family consists of our Esox species as well as some European ones and then the African Pike is something totally different also. The SA Pike-Cichlids are not related to the others, as they are simply elongated cichlids that IMO appear to behave similar to Parachromis species. Pikes and Pike-Cichlids should probably be distinguished as the topic of dicussion, but internet-shorthand has made it a little blurry at times.
the European pikes are esox, they are northern pikes...in Europe lol.

do yourself a favor and get an odoe Frank, mine is amazing.

didn't mean mix like that, I meant like an exporter or importer calling hjueta "rocket gar", or theoretically calling an esox species "northern gar" or Luciocephalus being called "crocodile pike"

for the less nerdy among us its an easy thing to just accept since they all look vaguely similar to one another, if you're not fully aware of what differentiates them.
