New Monster Fish Shop on the island! -- all the stars are lining up

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Just give us a hint pretty please with a cherry on top?

Ok, even I can succumb to peer pressure, and no need for me to over-dramatize the whole thing, of course lots of peeps on MFK with better fish and tanks.

Anyway here's the lovely showpiece I plan to put in the 375g...

All kidding aside, it's actually similar but a bit larger, in fact Mr. Deadliestviper7 guessed it correctly: "Mines on aro, it's the Asian fishkeepers fish of choice." (though I'm not Asian :))

In fact (I think) I have a 24K Golden Crossback on hold (waiting for me to move into new house around end of the month). As mentioned earlier I've paid a deposit on a (hopefully) nice fish. I may make another more detailed post about my experience, but as alluded to earlier I was (and still am), somewhat worried I might have fallen for a FB Arowana scam....I feel a bit better now because seller has agreed to take the fish to Post Office, show it in bag and box at the desk, take some pix and send to me before taping up and handing over to PO staff -- then as soon as I've received the pix I'll immediately send him the 40% balance due.

If it turns out he doesn't go to the post office and walks away with my deposit, that'll suck but it's not end of the world and would definitely be a learning lesson.

If he does in fact send the the pix and fish, the main question is quality -- because he's sent me pix/vids that are clearly of different fish so far as I can tell. When I asked him about this, he admitted his company/outfit in fact isn't breeding the fish and gets them from a number of breeders around Thailand. So in fact they're a broker despite his FB page indicating otherwise.

Here's some vids and pix he sent me (and in this order), each time saying this is the fish (with certificate and PIT tagged) he would send...

And then later after I asked for more pix:

Hope some Aro pros could chime in, but from what I've learned I don't think GB's should be that golden at that age, it's usually not til they're older that they really color up. So I'm wondering if either pix were taken under a yellowish light, or even worse, might be injected with gold color before selling.

Also I'm now thinking (after more research/shopping) that the price this supposed 10" GB is going for ($300) is for sure on the cheaper side for a good quality GB nowadays.

Fortunately though I have established a back-up plan if I'm not happy with the quality (if it even comes), and that is to sell this fish to the new local monster fish shop. They have agreed to buy it for a reasonable price if in good health. In that case I have found another, much more reputable (and for sure breeder, not broker) here in Thailand, where I could get a very good quality GB, albeit at quite a bit more cost.

So at this point I'm just going to chill about it, in the meantime learn more about Asian Aros and their care, then will update later as things play out toward the end of the month.

What type of arowana is that? I've never heard of a gold something arowana.

It's a Malaysian Golden Crossback (with 24K moniker, though another breeder told me the 24K is just marketing lingo -- just like "Kamfa 9.9" -- and that all GB's are Malaysian Golden Backs), though I myself cannot attest to that. If you see a nice, larger one in real life though, they're absolutely gorgeous.

One interesting thing new breeder told me is (at least for Thai market) that Golden Backs used to usually be more expensive than Indonesian Red Arowana (e.g. Blood Reds & Chilies), but the market has now switched around and Reds are more expensive (about twice). I was considering to get one but I already have a very red Kamfa :) in another tank.
