Too big and mean for a tank that size, similar to a flowerhorn or a Midas.

trimacs definitely get too big. if you're interested in that look though then definitely check out the salvini. they're often referred to as a mini-trimac. if you want something a bit more rare then check out Amphilophus lyonsi. I believe A. lyonsi will grow a bit larger than salvini but not by much. Lyonsi I think max. out around 10".

dempsey

I actually started out with a couple of green terrors with my jacks and firemouths when none of them were much bigger than an inch. unfortunately I had terrible luck with them, which is too bad because they are the fish that got me interested in keeping cichlids in the first place. The water was kept at a ph around 6.8 and i used a softener pillow, temperature right around 80. Any ideas as to what may have gone wrong?

Easy choices:

Gold Saum/White Saum (grows VERY slow and maxes out at 10-12" average)

Jack Dempsey (a pair of blue dempsey would be nicer!)

Salvini

Lyonsi (like a smaller, less aggressive version of Flowerhorn/Trimac)

Green Terror (the TRUE green terror :naughty: ....8" max.....super aggressive....you can grab one from Jeff Rapps)

Discus

Green Severum

Green Texas Cichlid :naughty:

Grammode ??

Similar question in regards to a flowerhorn--friend has an 8-inch male, in a 29g, wants to get rid of him (he's completely grey, no color, very sad monster)--how long could he be happy in a 55? Thanks! (feel like I'm becoming the local monster fish rescue--horses are cheaper LOL)

well, the poor thing will definitely be happier in a 55 than in a 29, but once it gets to around 10-12" I'd be looking for a 75 for it.

RESCUE IT! RESCUE IT! RESCUE IT!

It would be WAY happier in the 55 gallon. Some people keep FH in 55 for life. But yeah, once they get over 10 inch it will start to seemed cramped....take the fish...upgrade to 75 whenever...55 will work for a while til u want to upgrade....

How does it look? You said it's a male too! :grinyes:
