New Natives

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
this is probably a stupid question, because I know the answer, but i just want to get your take on your inhabitants now. I believe you started the tank with the idea of being a reef or sw at least, then went to fw, then to natives due to the cost of heating the tank. am I right? (i assume natives means you dont have to heat it at all, since they're used to whatever the temp is. probably warmer in your basement anyway)

So my question is, are you happy with your inhabitants? I know you are, but I mean, really happy? do you wish you had gone w/ SW, or at least want to start a SW tank?

The reason I'm asking is because I am planning my own FW tank, but doing the research, I started getting the SW Reef bug, which is a more expensive bug to come down with.

I dont have ANY plans on inhabitants yet. I live in Las Vegas which is night and hot 80% of the year. Lake Mead has some bass, catfish, sunfish, etc etc. Not really something I had ever considered as keeper fish. Would you recommend to go native, or FW at all?

How much does it cost to run the tank? seems like you just gotta pay for lighting and pumping now. And maybe a dehumidifier or 2 :)

ty so much for the great threads, the informative follow ups, and being so damn awesome!

Awesome!!!! Me likes all of them.

I originally wanted to build the tank for Malawi Haps and Peacocks with a sprinkle of mbuna.

Big time happy!
I would love SW but until I get my basement done all the extra funds will be going into finishing this project off. That is if I have nay extra cash when the new addition arrives.

In the beginning I never really got into Natives till I went to the NANFA website and I had a look at some of the amazing looking sunfish like the Pumpkinseed and Longears and others like Darters and Dace. Your best bet is to go HERE to see whats available in your area and see what the laws are on collecting then you can see if you want to go the natives route.

Less than $30 a month to run the tank. The pump I have now in the sump runs at about 270W but I'll be changing over to a Quiet One pump that uses half the wattage and the FX5 is only 50W. The lighting is just 4x 4' T12 shop lights 160W but they are only on for about 10 hrs a day. . I'll be upgrading soon to about 512W total of T-8 bulbs to plant the tank but I'm going to have them set up to run like a natural daylight cycle so there will only be a 6-7 hr period where all 512 watts are on. One good thing about no heaters is the water temp and air temp are the same so the amount of evap is really low so I don't need any dehumidifiers.

awesome fish and great tank!
