Well, not to start an argument here but anything 'can' last 20 years. My old POS aqueon hob filter should have died long ago. I buy it used from a guy who bought it used snd so forth. The label on it says 1992. Btw it might not be Aqueon I'm just assuming it is; it looks similar. It reminds me of a marineland b4 the biowheel I suppose. It is so old the whole filter has some sort of decaying organic mulm about 2" thick on the bottom. I start gagging when I clean the thing and use quarantine equipment. And I wear a surgeons breaher mask.

I know some have issues with the cheaper filters, however I see just as many the name brands also. Its really a matter of personal taste and ill stick with these with my sump.

Please post a picture of that label - I have yet to see the year of manufacture on a filter.

I have a model 2017 that did last twenty years (much longer than you've been alive) and I have several 2217s that are pushing ten years old. The quantity of detritus in a filter is not a good indicator of age, but rather an indicator of poor maintenance practices.
 
Considering even a lot of the big brand filters etc are made in China i don't doubt the local Chinese brands would be too bad...

The only thing i would possibly worry about is the QC on the Chinese brands, since i'm sure brands like Ehiem etc would probably be a lot more stringent on testing their products to try and minimize the amount of bad products leaving their doors...

With a canister the height of the filter has nothing to do with head pressure, which is the difference between the intake and outflow heights. A taller filter, or placing the filter at a higher position will not result in more GPH. This is only true with sumps.

Actually Mines is the 700 Model so its like 23". The 14i is really tall, just remember seeing it in person at Aquatraders. The Uv is build in the center of the canister. I cant speak for the 14i but the 700&500 cant compare to a FX5 which I have. Side note the Hose clamps fits on the fx5
