Just got a young Albino Tiger Oscar. I have him in a 55 gallon tank with a Pleco and a Gold Gourami who is currently a little larger than the new Oscar. I am hoping that these two will be compatible tank mates. Does anyone have any experience keeping these two different species together? The tank has plenty of hiding places and had been well cycled before the Oscar was introduced about an hour ago. I have sectioned off the Gold Gourami to let the Oscar get aquainted with the tank. I am planning on returning the Gold Gourami into the rest of the tank after the Oscar has had about 5 hours to adjust and acliment himself to his new environment. I did this because the Gold Gourami was feeling up the Oscar with his little feelers (hehe) pretty consistantly and I did not want to cause the Oscar any uneccessary stress after just having been introduced into his new tank.

Any advice or input would be awesome! This is my first Oscar and I wanna treat him right. I have seen an Oscar and a Gold Gourami kept together and I thought it would work well.

Thanks Keepers...

It should be fine for the time being. The Oscar will quickly outgrow the gourami and could probally eat him for dinner in about 8 months, maybe sooner. Do you plan to move the Oscar to a larger tank?

it should work out for some time, in long term setup, might work, but a larger tank would be better to make up for the size difference, diffuse aggression

Yeah...whenever he outgrows his current set-up he will get a larger home. Is a 55 gallon too small for an Oscar? I have been told that an adult needs a 100 gallon, but I have also been told that a 55 gallon tank is fine.

I was planning on upgrading his home eventually...but how detrimental would it be for an Oscar to live by himself in a 55?

Not saying that this is my plan...just asking.

Yeah...I figured the Gourami would be quickly outgrown.

yea going to have to upgrade the tank but They should be fine fo rnow together right now I have 2 grown angel fish in wiht my oscars in their pond I have it well planted and have some homemade caves out of some big rocks that I found and drift wood they get along great there is I have not seen aggression from the angels or the oscars

Oscars when they grow up with a fish tend to leave them alone and a gold Gourami gets about 5-6 inches so you should be fine. You may have more issues with the older Gourami bullying the young oscar for a while.

the oscar can be in a 55 for quite some time IMO, but you need to be very careful with water quality, as it can deteriorate quite fast, and open up the oscar to HITH and other problems

My first tank was a 55 years ago and i had an oscar in there by himself for quite a few years. He never had any deformalities and seemed quite happy. Bigger is better, but a 55 should be the bare minimum IMO.

Hi there, Oscarfishlover!
Thought I recognized your name!:D
Good to see you again, you come to the right places!

A 55 is considered enough for one oscar, but with sufficient filtercapacity you shouldt be alright with your current stocking.
But I'd say get ready to upgrade, for it will be better for your fish and easier on the maintenance.
Guess I'll see you around!:grinno:
