I have clay pots in my tanks but i'm just starting my breeding up. Thats what the breeder had in his tanks at least the few I saw videos in. However I think the slate will work. Good question.

yea because i saw pots where i got them but i feel like they just take up to much room especially because theyre big jacks allready

So I bought a clay pot today and "installed" it in the tank and not even 10 mins later......female and male are flaring in and around the pot

Sounds like spawning behavior. Just make sure they don't get trapped behind it. I'd move it of the wall. My jack wedged himself in once and couldn't get out.
Also, they should be cleaning it and that will signify eggs soon.

Will do I'm so excited......one question not just these fish but cichlids in general.........If a pair is bonded then why do they fight everytime before breeding?

mating behaviour there also testing each other but mines do it all the time
I don't exactly know. Some times I can't tell if it is mating or fighting swell. But I know the first time it's to test the other... Which I hate cause I worry for my fish a lot. But as a bonded pair I do not know. Maybe I worry too much and that's why I haven't been able to spawn big cichlids, only Kirbensis and convicts.
