hey guys i just got 3 new baby pairanhas and im wondering is it safe to feed them a all guppie feeder diet some say yes some say no, need other opinions, lfs says its okay what do you think or should i put em on shrimp and feed them guppies once and a while? Also how do you keep live plants with piranhas if they eat algea eaters? Also not sure which type these fish are i think there Caribe but ill have a pic when i get them into the tank.

Few questions how big are they. And do you want to keep a plecotumus with them. And what size tank do you plan on keeping them in. if you ansere these questions it will be better for us to help you. As far as guppies and shrimp try flakes first if they eat them try pellets and bits of fish are better to feed than shrimp. Shrimp is more of a treat in my book.

currently they are in a 75g tank and there only a inch about and i have 3, i belive they are Carbia Piranhas, eventually will 3 outgrow a 75g, if not what other fish do you recommend with them, currently i have them eating feeder guppies they chow em. i would like a plecotumus with them but i dunno if tank is big enough.

Post some pics if you can we can I'd them for you. I think caribs will be ok in a 75. Feeders are a snack. I wuld try pelets at their size. Try hikari sinking carnivore pellets to start might get them interested in floating pelets. If you want a pleco I wuld get one bout 3 to 4" insize. If you have plenty of hiding spots for him you shuld be ok but if not then remove him from the tank. I keep plants with my piranha and don't have a pleco. But do a lot of cleaning.

3 pygos will be fine in 75g unless you have pirayas, other wise you'll be fine.
you can try to get them on pellets or feed them white fish fillets (ie, catfish, tilapia, bass, etc), smelts, silversides, etc.
guppies will be ok (as long as they are quarantined or you are breeding them yourself)but eventually they will be too small for your piranhas as they grow bigger. if your tank has lots of plants you can try to breed them in the tank, it adds activity to the tank and some snack for them chew on when they get bored.
is there any reason you want to add a pleco? such as algae issue? if not then I wouldn't add one. not just because it may get eaten but also because pleco poops a lot and adds unnecessary bio load to your filtration system. make sure your filter can keep up with the bio load especially if you start feeding them fish fillet and stuff.

yea i decided screw the plants and went plastic with some drift wood and rocks :P but 3 wont out grow a 75 plant? Ill try and post some pics tonight on this thread thanks for the info guys, the people at my LPS said they have been feeding them frozen dried shrimp, so ill prob get them going on that and guppies, so you dont recommend using feeder guppies from LPS less i breed them?

Also when they get bigger what do you recommend feeding them for live food? besides guppies, gold fish or..

also what do u mean by white fish fellets, like stuff u get in a grocery store? and how often do u feed the these fish, with feeder fish i wanna be careful tho i dont wanna spread disease and kill these guys so can some 1 please give me pointers.

Its just the meat color, Salmon = pink and is very high in fat. The fish listed above have white meat that is leaner. If you go to an asian market/store you can normally get the fish whole for about half the price and it gives them scales and what not to eat as well. Your best bet for disease control is quarintine tanks or to breed your own feeders. Both take quite a bit of time and there is no extreme need for your piranha to eat live food. I have a 20 gal tank with convicts in it that ive been breeding but its taken nearly 3 months to get the first batch of fry to a bit bigger than an inch and I was told they grow faster then guppies. I think I spend more time cleaning the tank then what the feeders are worth to me.
