New PetSmart tags reveal Blood Parrot parentage?

While I realize that this is an old topic, I just wanted to correct something that was posted early on with regards to the color red & its potential origin in the BP.

now this is a lot more likely, the real red colouration shown in the blood parrot is not generated of that by a midas, the midas does not naturally have such red colouration. so there would have been line breeding, such line breeding and cross breeding to produce the red mein, now what i am saying it is not straight midas x syn. there is nothing basic about the composition of a blood parrot.

Actually the midas cichlid (A. citrinellus) does in fact come in a red morph, just as red as the red mein that were originally line bred in Malaysia and shown in this thread. The "red" morph has been mentioned since back in the 1960's when the late George Barlow was collecting & studying the various amphilophus found in the crater lakes of Central America, and these same red morphs can still be seen in some of the descendants imported over the past decade by Jeff Rapps.
