so i ordered some gar at the lfs i work at, they came from singapore as spotted gars but i have a feeling they are floridas. they are about 5''. i brought 2 home and have them chillin in a 10g with some rosy reds atm, both seem to be eating and have settled in nicely. my question is at what size should they be before i upgrade them to my 30g and then to my 90g?

i have plenty of experience with larger gars(10''+) but i have not owned little ones before so any other tips are welcome

cheers,
Jordan

First thing I'd recommend is not to feed them rosy reds.

Sigh... When he first posted I wasn't sure how much he knew about fish keeping or how much experience he had. As such I gave the advice I give to every nooby who thinks feeding nothing but goldfish without quarantine or feeding them quality food, is fine. I haven't been disagreeing with you. I'm just saying that goldfish and other fish with thiaminase will not make a good diet by themselves. That's all I'm saying. How difficult this has been makes me want to shoot myself. I agree with everything else that has been said, ( for the most part) I was just trying to ensure that the OP prepared his feeders or better yet not use feeders at all. Seriously this was like pulling teeth.

ok, sorry this has been so difficult for you, but let's break this down...and rest assured, this probably wouldn't be the case if you didn't carry on the same attitude/MO in many of your other posts on this forum.

first off, you should have read the OP's post more carefully - according to your statement, you didn't know how much he knew about fishkeeping and therefore proceeded to give him advice you give to "every nooby".

this was clearly an incorrect assumption and your advice was not only less than useful, it was more or less incorrect for this situation.
look at the OP's post - he clearly states that he has other larger tanks for upgrade...that doesn't sound like a noob. he also has plenty of experience with larger (10"+) gars...people who have kept gars before generally aren't complete noobs...at the very least it doesn't warrant assuming they are, which you did.

in your initial response you said "first off..." yet you never get around to any more useful advice...probably should have included that in your post instead of just a relatively sarcastic comment usually good for a "noob".
in your latest response you go on to say that it's better not to use feeders at all...
...apologies, do you have a better and proven method that works with early stage YOY gars that doesn't use feeders? do you have 5" FLGs taking enough hikari to keep them on task with normal captive growth for the species? have you done this with many individuals?

the general practice works here...feed live to a certain size and then switch/mix it up along the way. at the very least, if you are going to bluntly and shortly and sarcastically say what "not" to do, at least also provide some info as to what IS the right course of action (or LINK them to it).

...and don't shoot yourself.--

Annnnnnd I give up.

Considering you have completely missed my point through this entire "conversation" and misunderstood everything I said, it should be I posting Captain Picard.

nah, you're more of a wesley crusher at best...but i digress.

pretty sure the OP got the necessary info at this point (maybe even you too), so i'll boldly go to other threads--

I'm just going to ignore this and talk to the OP.

I like to use guppies and baby convicts rather than goldfish or rosy reds. But the method of feeding described above is usually the best course of action. Although I know a few people who fed nothing but shrimp and tilapia ( both frozen) from 3" to 12" with pretty good results. When you finally get your gar onto pellets, hikari or NLS are the best brands in my opinion. Once over twelve inches I think alternating between frozen food and pellets daily is the best diet, with once weekly live feeders as a treat.
