New Poly Senegal

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The gravel from homer depot was a 50lb bag of their "pea gravel". The grain is a little bigger than you typically see in aquariums, but it worked. I am sure your natural gravel will work fine. Others will warn you about your poly eating the gravel. I can neither confirm nor deny it. I figure the bigger grains that I got will lessen the possibility of a mistaken grain eaten, and the small grains of sand will pass easy. So... YMMV.

Alright, thank you guys. He seemed to eat a few of my frozen brine shrimp that I put in there. Should I buy sinking pellets probably and where can you buy Massivore? I've seen a few people on here talk about it, thanks...
Yours eats brine shrimp and mine won't mine is 8" and yours is 3" whats going on here. Feed him a steady diet of bloodworms, chopped beefheart when he gets some size along with pellets and would go with sand substrate because of the problem with him potentally eating gravel. Good Luck with your Senegal and welcome to the Polypterus Club you will be hooked soon enough.

lol, I'm already hooked. I want another one... I want to change the gravel to something, so I guess I'll try sand. Pool sand or aragonite or something?

I got the expensive sand from the petco and petsmart but pool filter sand will work fine.

Nice lookin little guy not long till he gets to at least 5" probably in about 1.5 months if well feed.

They are definitely jumpers. My delhezi jumped out when they were trying to get it out at the LFS and it took us almost half an hour to find it.

Can i get a 3" senegal in a 10 gallon for a start? He'll be all by himself is that bad? or should I put in some mates in there like a brown knife fish? he's about 6"? This will just be a temp home til I get my 55 up and running?
