Just pick up this guy today. Ordered it from a lfs, was only $49 and picked up a Retro too, both are about 6"-7". Was sold as a Guinea Bichir, to me it looks like a Endi but have seen a few Laps that look similar. Any ideas?
I think it might be an Ansorgii. I have read the Ansorgii has almost even upper and lower jaws and mine has that feature, the pics of Endis I have seen the lower seems to stick out much further. It looks just like this one http://primitivefishes.com/RickyAnsorgii1.jpg
from what i've read, endlixansorgii have a finnlet count of twelve or less, i counted 13 on this bichir. to my understanding that would make this an ansorgii. but mabey my count was off. mabey Earl(KingEL) or tokyogasmask could weigh in on this topic and staighten this out
I just counted the finnlets and he does have 13. "The jaws are of similar length, though the lower jaw is likely to protude slightly on mature specimens. The 12-15 dorsal finlets extend forward to the rear of the pectoral fins". From polypterus.info.Ansorgii. His jaws are the exact same lenght as far as I can tell I will try and get some more detailed pictures later. But if if turns out to be a Ansorgii or a endlixansorgii it will be well taken care of no matter what. And I feel I received a good deal at $49.99 for him 6"+.
