New possible stingray tank - need help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Maurice, I think you have a good tank for rays! I have a pair of P14s and they are only in a 80cm width. I did make an effort to find small specimens though, if my rays grow any larger, will need to switch!

I think your 6ft by 4ft tank can be used for the smaller species. I won't hesitate to put a trio of hystrix in a 6 by 4. But maybe just a pair of smaller P14s or other larger species.

I do prefer 2 female and 1 male combos. Sometimes I feel my female P14 gets pestered a bit much despite her larger size.
Thank you for your time and information, i will do some more research before i actually buy a singray

I think you could keep any species of Ray you want in a 6x4, being you only keep a pair. If you have plans to upgrade to that 9x6 in 3 years then heck you could probably keep half a dozen of any rays you want
Half a dozen might be a little over the top but the health of the rays are a pre to me so i rather do some light stocking to give them more room

Thank you for the information,
The species i really like are motoros, bd, leo , henlei and marbled maybe some hybrids too , close to my area someone had BDxHenlei pups forsale and also other breeds are easy to get in my area. A had a good talk with my Gf and she allowed me to go 250x140x60cm(8.2'x4.5'x2') this will make 2100liter/550Gal and when the garage is finished i allowed to build a 320x200x100cm(10.5'x6.5'x3.2')6400liter/1680gal pure plywood for better isolation.

I think these are better dimenions then before. And i might keep the small tank for pup growout when the big tank is build in the garage.

Will i be able to keep a pair of the rays above in the 250x150x60/8.2'x4.5'x2'?

If this isnt enough to start out im going to wait to build the bigger tank in the garage.
Yup, your on the right track for sure. That tank will be big enough to house several rays of almost any variety for a long time...some for life. I also like to use a small tank for a pup grow out. 4 foot by 2 foot by 2 foot is the size I built for my grow out. Works well. I like to grow the pups to about 10 inch diameter before moving them to the main tank. Sounds like your gonna be a successful ray keeper! Good luck!!

It's nice to have the space for your rays but it's also nice for the rays to be in a group. They seem to love to touch and be with eachother. It's all about finding the right balance. One thing you don't talk about is filtration. This is just as important if not more then tank size. In a 9x6 I personally would not have less then 5 rays in that tank so because of that my filtration would be over the top.

Yup, filtration is key. Overkill is the rule, and in my opinion a drip is a must. Keeps the parameters very consistent. Keeping rays in a group is beneficial for many reasons. Males tend to beat up females pretty bad, so having 2 or 3 females per male is a good idea. I'm still working towards that myself. So far I only have a pair. Hope to track down a trio of big spotted bd's soon!

Im still working on the filtration but im leaning towards fluidised K1, im not sure howmuch of it i need for a good filtration, any sugestions for my stocking?

will the 250x140x60cm(8.2'x4.5'x2') be big enough for a couple or trio of Motoros,bd,leo or henlei untill i upgrade to my 320x200x100cm(10.5'x6.5'x3.2')? just making sure so i can progress in my planning stage. I rather have some extra confirmation because i dont want to make any stupid decisions.

I currently have a spare 5.2x2x2 foot so good to know i can use it as growout aswell, currently i have wildcaught Oscars in it but then ill have to see what im gonna do with them, well maybe buy another 5x2x2 ....fish tanks are so addictive my girlfriend is gonna kill me..

Yup, fish tanks are like potato chips, you can't have just one! Your 8.2' × 4.5' will be good for a few rays...probably 6 or so.

Your gf agreed to a 250cm tank? And potential upgrade to 320cm?! You need to marry this one!!!

Yeah with those dimensions, trios will be no problem. Personally, i will only keep hybrids in ponds, could be hybrid vigour or something, but i think on average they may get bigger.

However, having such a huge tank, maybe you should consider a constant drip system. I spend a few hours every monday doing water changes and my tank is tiny compared to what you are planning.

Yea well it took some sacrifices aswell... for example : now im allowed to build two big tanks were going to buy a cat, because thats what she wants... she also wants some crystal lights for the beds room, well i guess i gotta give her those else i wont be allowed to build some tanks:(.... ohh well shes worth more then a million gallons so me
