That 40 will be fine for a retic for awhile dont worry. Do water changes and keep tabs on your params.
If you decide to go with a motoro, get a CB male from crystalclear and you will be good to go for AWHILE. I will pat you on the back if your MALE motoro outgrows that 220 in less then three years.
Better choice would be P. cf hystrix. They are one of the easiest rays to keep and the smalles two, you could do a trio in a 220 for awhile. Im growing my male 3.5" hystric in a 29 with an el cheapo whisper intank filter. I dont plan on moving him for at least three or four months or untill he approaching 5" whichever comes first.
Dont let everyone make you think you need a billion gallon tank for your rays. YOu dont. As long as you ahve the filtration and change the water regularly to keep waste down youll be fine. Heck, Ive seen motoros breed in tanks smaller then 180s!
