New Ray tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Fantastic project!..you must be very happy with that, rays look great too, cracking Marble ray in one of the pictures.......i remember commenting on that one a while ago.
Well done!.....thanks for sharing, youve inspired a few people with that....truly awesome!!

very nice setup!

ive always wondered if the sand filter alone is enough mechanical filtration for rays... seems to me it would get sooo dirty soo quick, u would need some sort of prefilter.

Just got my first look at this tank. Simply amazing. You spent a lot of time planning that thing out I can tell. I do not even want to know the price tag. That tiger has an amazing tail. Oh yeah, loving the castexi. Would love to see a closer pic of the male.

Very nicley done !!!! Some day i will do a project that pro!!! probly half that size tho:WHOA::headbang2

Very simple filtration. A reeflow hamerhead pump pushing through a 24" sta-rite sand filter with part of the return going to the brute garbage can which is actually a bioreactor. The electric water heater was only brought online for the initial heating as the drip system and pumps provide all the heat needed. The drip system is just a cold and hot water line valaved together and then ran through a sediment and 2 charcoal flters. There is a reeflow barracuda used for just circulation. The over flow and sand filter waste are tied diectly into the house drain lines. Added a new electrical panel for the tank equipment. The pvc junction box has controllers, timers and relays for the lighting, heater and pump. The lighting is 2- 8' 4 tube lamp fixtures with the lamps paired off turning 2 on/off at 4 different time intervals controlled by a timer designed for auto water systems. The heater controller is a johnsen controls model which allows me to set the on off temps very presicely. There is also a omron timer that when a feed pushbuttun is pressed it will shut the circulating pumps off for 10 minutes. The air pump is a podmaster ap-100 model which provides the bioreactor with air and part of the tank airstones also. Still have alot of things I want to do and try but that is what is making this whole project so fun.
And now for sme pics!

 I think that description and the pics that followed count as porn to just about any fish hobbyist.

:jaw: Holy heck that is an awesome tank! I LOVE how you did the tiles, I was thinking exactly the same thing (setting the tiles into liquid rubber rather than mortar).

un-frickin-believeable! :headbang2
Thanks, the tiles hold almost too well to the liquid rubber. I had to remove one and it was a very unpleasent experience.

You just pushed more towards my own build versus buying a large acrylic. How much clearance
do you have between top of tank and ceiling? Also how did you do the supports on the underside
and with what size wood?

Looks Great.
Go for it a little research and patience and your there. There is around 2' of clearance from the roof to the tank at he moment but the drop cieling will be gone when I do my basement renos hopefully next winter.

nice tank skynoch and also the residents. love to see the filter system. overhere in asia, to build something like that on our own may cost us a bomb..
I couldn't even imagine what it costs over there, you do have the advantage of having some amazing looking outdoor ponds. Thanks for the kind words.

I'm really happy how it's all turning out. It's giving me more room in my basement once the all the other tanks are down, more time, cheaper to run and of course a way nicier way to enjoy all my rays. Great memory on the marble. Thanks for the kind words.

Thanks, the sand filter seems to be working great so far for mechanical. The only thing is I'm not making it as efficient as it could be as I backwash it every 2-3 days when the pressure goes up 1 psi. The reason why I do it so soon is the pumps I'm using are not great for pressure but are amazing on cost effeciency and sound. I may switch over to a bigger pump that can handle more pressre so I can let the filter clog up more making it filter to a finer micron particle. For now the backwash takes about 30 seconds and the drip system fully recovers the water loss in about 4 hours or less. The water level never gets below the top of the window. This system is so easy, I never get wet, moving a handle is my biggest struggle and my bio never gets touched. The sand filter is filled with zeolite which is claimed to filter down to 3 micron but was tested to go down to 15 I'm probably worse due to not allowing it to clog. I have about 3.5 cubic feet of biomedia in my bioreactor and no problems with ammonia or nitrite. I'm not sure where my drip is set at but I'm installing a flow meter on it in the next week or so when it comes in.

Thanks, I know I kinda let you down on the pic of the male castexi but he was having nothing to do with the camera that day, I'll try and get som better shots when he's being a camera hog.
There was a lot of changes that took place in the window layout as I could not find or even order in a large peice of acrylic fo it, so I ended up with a 8' x 42" x 1.25" for the front window and the side windows were 2' x 42" x .75". This is where most of my time was consumed.
