These should get you started in the right direction of thinking about gill curl, I think:

Unless it is genetic, there is a good chance it will right itself as the fish grows.

I don't see anything special about this RTC yet in terms of "spottiness". I need more pics from various angles.

That's intriguing! Is there an explanation why a wave maker would help remedy the gill curl?

Sorry for hijacking your thread speskowl. I just got 2 RTCs of my own for a few weeks now. Only the big one's been starting to bite the smaller one recently. They're all in a 44 gallon tank which should be replaced by January or February. The bigger one is 7 inches, while the smaller one is about 6. There's an 8 inch alligator gar which chills in there too. From what I read it's normal for them to be territorial during this size.
Any advice on it?

Welcome to MFK! Would you please start your own thread on your questions and ask the mods to delete your and mine posts here. Not giving you a rude welcome but quite on the opposite, trying to help you get started right, bro. You are derailing the thread, whether or not you say sorry :)

The tank is too small most likely. Can't have three big fish in a 40 gallon

Cool! I really like these little guys! I have owned a fair few and they always have gill curl when I get them, just keep water perimeters perfect and after a week or 2 it should heal perfect, good luck :)
