New Reef Build

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have found that regarding reefkeeping, the online consensus for everything is to be way more careful and restrictive, than actually necessary. I've had people in another reef forum telling me all along that I was moving too quickly, doing this wrong, wait 6 months for that, I need an ATO, need more light, etc. I mostly ignored it all and have had success so far. Even with transferring everything in the tank to larger setups twice now within a year (newest setup is also a peninsula btw)
Id say go with your gut, looks like your doing great. This tank is going to be awesome.

The problem is so many different things have worked and failed for so many different people. That's why I usually lead it off with "I would" or imo.

The absolute biggest problem in sw imo is finding quality livestock. These people seem to collect these things by any means necessary. You'll get 1 person who cant keep a certain animal alive and another that can't kill it. So you end up with a bunch of dogma.

That's a good point. I had a wrasse I really liked, paid some money for it, oonly for it to drop for seemingly no reason after a month or two after appearing to do well. Then I was told that they collect them with formaldehyde to put them to sleep and sometimes the fish just don't last long. After that experience I'm much more keen on captive bred fish than anything collected.

Important to know who you are buying from and who their wholesaler is. Have good connections and you won’t have to worry. Same applies for freshwater

Who do you recommend? Its been spotty with big angels. I had a passer that was great but maculosus which is suppose to be bulletproof fall on its face.

I've used divers den but the rest have been sketchy at best

I use a variety. I have a local guy who dives in the ocean and hand picks his own coral. He is fairly famous in the hobby for his SPS frags (Reef Raft- Jay). I use both candy corals as well as another local guy for higher end LPS. Canada corals is normally my go to for fish as well as easier to get corals. He has a contract with a fish wholesaler who performs the QT process and ships to your door, name doesn’t come to mind right now. I know they only sell fish that have been in QT for minimum 2 weeks as expected by CC guidelines. I use big als and fragbox from time to time as well.
