Yes, the SAL isn't going any where, but I am fine with lowering the water level unless that will cause my filters to not work. It doesn't bother the two catfish, and it didn't bother the 4" SA cichlid that used to be in there with them (got rid of it because it was stressed by the catfish and vice versa on account of the three being afraid of each other).

Might it be possible for me to introduce the arowana to the 55 gallon once it gets to be 4" or larger because the SAL is so mild mannered? I would be sure to watch closely for any signs of aggression.

Sounds like a death sentence for your arowana.:(

Okay, so I guess I'll figure something else out. I don't want to get rid of either the arowana or the SAL, so would a screen cage of sorts in the 55 gallon work better than the 10 gallon until the arowana gets bigger? Please keep in mind that I'm not going to introduce the arowana into the 55 gallon without a separator until it is larger and the catfish are gone.

The problem with the cichlid before was the catfish; the SAL is pretty much a living decoration that enjoys being pet and eating prepared food. The cichlid even hung out by the SAL's head at times, so I think that the arowana should be fine once he's a bit bigger.

You can do as you like, if the aro dies or is eaten you can always buy another, right? I gave you my advice on the matter, and I don't see a reason the deviate.

I don't want the arowana to die; I have no intention of getting another one any time soon if this one dies.

The problem with your advice is it involves getting rid of the SAL which isn't going to happen which is why I mentioned some of my other ideas in order to find an alternative that doesn't involve getting rid of either fish. Based on your advice, it might be fine once it hits 6", but I need a solution for the time until it it gets that long.

We all have to make choices on which fish we get to keep. Maybe you should wait until later in life to raise an arowana. Or you can risk raising it in one of your tanks.

I realize this fact, but it is starting to seem like a lose-lose situation for the little arowana... He was getting his fins torn up by what he was kept with at the LFS and death due to disease and/or stress would come slowly, but it would happen eventually. There is potential for him to get eaten by one of my current fish, so that is also an unpleasant fate for him.

How fast will it grow to be 6" (I've been finding many different and sometimes conflicting growth rates)? I'll see about moving the SAL for a short period of time in order to give the arowana a head start on growing bigger.

probably 2-3 months to grow to 6". That's with proper care, clean water and if you can get him eating regularly.

He's already eating for me now in the quarantine aquarium that he's in, so that's a good start, I guess. I'll be doing daily water changes to keep the water clean, so water quality shouldn't be an issue.

While the arowana is in quarantine, I'm going to look around for alternative housing methods for the SAL for during the time that it takes for the arowana to reach a size that will be adequate for allowing it to be housed with the SAL.

in your daily wc you need to be extra carefull to be sure that the temp/perams of the new water is the same as the water you have in there. nothing is more dangerous to a baby aro then unstable conditions. except a bigger fish. these fish fall into a research then buy catogory as apose to the buy then find out what you got section.

also from my exp. if you keep it in the same tank it will grow faster. moving it from tank to tank will slow the grow due to stress. another tid bit is small aros NEVER EVER stay on thier side of the divider. take that one from my exp aswell.
