Because my tank is outside, rain brings runoff from the surrounding vegetation carrying tannins in, and leaf littler and flowers are also constantly falling into the tank.
I believe it was the combination all the factors together tinting the water, but removing one factor was the ticket, and removing the aquaponic part was the simplest solution.
A friend in the states had an aquaponics business with 2 stories of plants above, and large tanks of Tilapia on the first floor, his water was always brown.
