New snakehead set up

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Right so the auranti has now ripped up all the plants out of the substrate and undermined the rock wall to the point were half of it has collapsed. She has now dug her self a burrow under the rock pile.... and is very friendly with the pulchra....

So... given that we know the auranti is female, is this a good thing? I guess it means she is happy in the tank? And is it even possible for a auranti and a pulchra to spawn?

Any auranti I have kept has liked to dig and burrow. I like to think of it as them decorating their home. I've never heard of snakeheads cross breeding, not saying it can't work genetically, but I don't think it would happen.

It's usually the male that prepares his "nest", when a pair is present since the female is not allowed in it.
Otherwise yeah, they're better at decorating than I am. :P

Just a quick update.. had to re-plant the swords in a basket as she just keeps uprooting them! On the plus side though I used the opportunity to put in some plant fertiliser tabs into the basket. Pulchra are growing like weeds and are more aggressive to the food than the cobra... but she is still twice the size of them so no aggression between any of them. Plants are growing in and I got some floating plants which they love... as they just hover underneath them. Anyone says that snakeheads hide a lot just needs to get the set up right, I can see mine constantly from pretty much anywhere on the living room! The tank looks great and even the missus (not know for her love of my tanks) loves it!

Okay update... both pulchra have been removed and returned to the shop as they were getting a little bit of aggression and i didn’t want to wait! The female auranti has grown a lot and is around 11-12 inches and really chunky. The tank is just coming out of its winter cycle ..... and have been able to get hold of a 7-8 inch confirmed male Auranti! So the plan is to get a divider (proabably some Plastic with holes in from the hardware store) and separate the two so they can see/smell each other. Then hope for the best. Any hints or tips on how to improve chances would be great and what should o be looking for if I was to remove the divider? Thanks

I fear that it will only end badly, mate. I've found auranti's to be particularly intolerant of their own, especially as adults. I would definitely use a divider if you are going to try it, make sure it's well fixed.
I would leave the divider in for a while, until(or if) they seem at ease with each other and keep trying them without the divider, replacing the divider when necessary. Doing this as many times over many days/weeks as needed.
Maybe over a long period they would become friends
