Went to the LFS that sold the gars, they still have two left and both of them was taking flakes in the LFS :o

Oh so maybe "Lepisosteus platyrhincus" should contact the fish shop and tell them they are wrong and need to feed lives, would you like the fish shops contact mate?

You did mention it was needed? so by saying it was needed I am guessing it was better for the fish and another member said it was needed for growth and health.
Food is almost always available, I will feed when the time comes. The thing is if I am able to get them on pellets I dont see how that isnt better? I'm sure gars are not the only fish that need food 24/7 when young, I have kept many fish since they were small and the same method was used for many, except for arowana where I used bloodworm instead.
But for you to say "if you saw it every minute." that is just silly and unrealistic. No one is able to do that. I am sure that I will be able to see the aggression or any sign of distress as I do check my fish really often due to big HBRTG and young silver aro that is also in my fish room.
I still insist what I have said is not wrong and I do not think I have taking anything out of context, however I appreciate your concern but just feel that there could be less aggression and immaturity in the comments.

All the fish are healthy and eating isn't that the main problem? And as Andrewsin said, are the LFS also doing it wrong? feeding the gar flake/pellets? They Look and are most probably healthy and growing.

The FF in the tank is also very small and have been kept in the tank with the characins since young and have not experienced any problems. Therefore it is safe to say that it will not affect the gar when it has not affected the smaller characins in the tank. But saying that doesn't mean I won't keep an eye of the behaviour of the fish. I have seen it when FF or plecs suck slime off other fish and know what the behaviour is like and I have yet to see any of that happen in both my grow outs and my main tank (bigger FF).

Gar are far more acceptable to slime sucking than the caracin. So yes it is still a major concern and not safe to say it wont be a problem. If you can feed pellets thats fine but you got lucky. Good for you. But if you just refused to feed feeders and if your gar wasnt taking pellets than we would have a major issue.

And yeah your LFS feeding flakes are doing it wrong.

Oh my lord, you are still not getting the point are you?
The gar is EATING that is the whole point. Feeder and pellets? Pellets over feeders without a doubt in my mind.
I have a way to make the gars accept pellets easier, If the gar was alone then I am sure it will take far longer and probably very risky for me to try pellet train. But the way worked and the gar is feeding.
I'm not sure how the LFS did it but their gars are also eating so what is the problem? ive been told their diet varies from pellets and flake so how is that a problem?

Seriously are pretty stubborn arent you ?

As for the slime sucking, I said it can be safe to say it is safe but I AM keeping a eye on the activity of the tank. I am a fishkeeper, I don't do it to see fish die? I will never allow any of my fish to starve, get attacked/bully.

If the gar is eatting good for you, the concern and suggestion for feeders was if your gar wasnt eatting pellets and you still refused to provide feeders.

I realised I forgot an If in my previous post. Fixed.

You never said in your initial post the LFS was feeding pellets and flake. You said flake. this is a problem. Pellets are great.

i assume this thread has gotten pretty asinine in terms of arguments, but i did want to reinforce the point that "just watching" for slime sucking is not the best way to deal with it. with gars, it only takes ONE time for it to happen (and it usually happens at night) for irreparable damage to the slime coat and/or enough damage for onset of nasty bacterial infections (which are very difficult to successfully treat in gars).

best move, remove slime-suckers from gar tanks. period. good luck--

Ad libitum- look it up swarsh. Look at the gar husbandry sticky. Those are for noobies to the gar world. If you dont want advice then dont ask for it.
