New Stingray Home (600g)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Awesome tank!

Thanks

Can't wait to see it full of water as well as your 340 with it's new occupants.

Thanks Kevin, cant wait to move the non ray occupants to the 340.

Extremely jealous, that's my ideal tank size

Thanks

I personally love my three Laguna pumps, by far the best performing and energy efficient pumps I've had. Way better than Mags if I have to compare. May want to ask Aldiaz as he's very well versed on pumps including Lagunas. They are indeed submersible so if you frown on that, may want to look elsewhere.

BTW, sick tank!

My understanding of Laguna from Aldiaz is they are very energy efficient also. Submersible doesnt bother me though.

And thanks

Awesome tank!!!! Keep us updated on progression of setup. Bless your wife!
What will be in the "small" tank? Some brown rays???

Thanks Jason, no more rays. Just moving something over from my 150 that will be converted to a sump for the 600.

Nothing special for most people here.

 jealous!!

Thanks, I was always jealous of everyone elses when they showed pics.

Looking into the Laguna 4200 pond pumps, I hear they are very quiet. My basement is completely finished and in use so converting one to a pump room or filter room isnt happening. Same with a drip, would have to run drain lines and plumbing across floor or alomg walls. Will stick to the old drain and fill water change method.

Biggest noise concerns are the pumps, I/we dont mind water splashing from the overflows.

Not doing anything with the black background.

It's well worth the time and effort to put I a drip

Yes it may take time to conceal pips but will save you so much time in the long run
Not to mention the hassle of laying out pipes across the living area twice per week with the risk of getting stuff wet

Wow amazing looking upgrade. Love the acrylic thickness and 30" height.

Air pump noise - if you want something silent Alita air pumps are expensive but very quiet. I liked the AL40 I was running on my pup tank so much I bought another for my marble tank. I also have a pondmaster ap100 that is also relatively quiet for the volume of air it pushes. The Alita's are really quiet though.

Water Pump - For external I am a big fan of these Evolution ESM pumps that have the high quality marathon motor http://www.calponds.com/Evolution-Pumps/Evolution-ESM-Pumps-p-6712.html Quiet, reliable, and well built. Wlim 1/15hp pump also a great external option but you'll probably need more flow for that size tank.

I have a laguna 4200 running as a secondary pump at the moment, and no complaints thus far. It's been running well the past 8 months. Only complaint would be the plumbing connector only goes up to 1.5" so there is some minor restriction where you have a short run of 1.5" tubing to 2" pipe.

Just wanted to share some 1st hand accounts. Congrats on the upgrade!

I use the Ap 100 pondmaster on my sump and I'm a huge fan. It makes a little noise, but not much more than my sump pump and with the sound of water trickling into the sump, it's not that noticeable. It pushes a huge volume of air, I'd recommend.

Only drawback on the Ap 100s (or all pondmasters in this case) is that they need to be rebuilt on a regular basis (getting 11-15 months/rebuild on the pair I'm running)

No biggie, the kits are really cheap (just rubber diaphrams that fail) just be sure to keep an extra on hand.......

It's hard to find another air pump that is as efficient as the pondmasters. Impossible when you factor in cost.

I know I'm late...but congrats on the tank...that's a whole other level! Can't wait to see it all done up!

Thanks, cant wait to get it up and running with all future occupants in it.

Just a quick glance at specs....... Power consumption, GPH at typical tank head, cost, comparing them to other pumps. I didn't even know they were submersible, but that alone would rule them out for me..... lol.

The luft pump I have running the skimmer on the eel tank was so friggin loud I ended up putting the thing in the basement and running air lines up through the ducts. Lufts suck volume wise, like I said, easy to find something stronger and quieter....

DB- I like you man...your posts are always on point, but the math just doesn't agree with your comment.

Power consumption comparison at typical tank head (6'):
Reeflo Super Dart Gold does 3,191GPH @ 6' head on 185 watts = 17.2GPH per watt
Laguna Max Flo 4280 does 2,935GPH @ 6' head on 160 watts = 18.3GPH per watt

Laguna is more efficient

Cost Comparison:
Reeflo Super Dart Gold- $388.95 aquacave.com (Free shipping)
Laguna Max Flo 4280- $296.39 Amazon.com (Free shipping)

Laguna is less expensive

After dealing with several Reeflos that had leaky seals (right out of the box), I gave the Lagunas a shot and I have been very happy with mine. It's been running like a champ for 2+ years.

Shadowstryker, you may want to consider running two Max Flo 2400s. It'll give you the benefit of redundancy (if one pump fails, the other will keep your system going) and the efficiency is actually even better than running one larger pump (two Max Flo 2400 will do 3,328GPH @ 6' head on 172 watts = 19.3 GPH per watt). You'll just have to decide if the redundancy is worth the extra cost (two 2400s will set you back around 450 bucks).

In regards to noise levels, I would say the Reeflo Super Dart and Lagunas are similarly quiet.

Disclaimer: You'll want to make sure your drains are properly sized to handle this much flow.

In regards to air pumps, I would recommend the DAPMH15 sold by Jehmco. I was/am really impressed at how quiet it runs. If you want the absolute best and money is no object, the Medo line of pumps are supposedly the best you will find. I was considering getting a Medo, but I couldn't justify spending so much on an air pump.

That tank is a beauty. Love those dimensions!

I goofed in my original post. The Laguna Max Flo 2400s pull 84 watts each, so they are even more efficient than I had originally posted. Below are the correct numbers:

Edit: (two Max Flo 2400 will do 3,328GPH @ 6' head on 168 watts = 19.8 GPH per watt)
