New Stingray Tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Nice job! Very clean build! But...

I would not trust it. You will get sag in the wood over that large of a span and your corners are weak, that is where most of the pressure is. I would put a 2x4 rib around the 2x12 as a "fix", with the 2" part facing the the 2x12 and the 4" facing up, or get some steel "L" brackets to hold those corners together. Did you use screws or nails for the corners?

I say this, because from experience, a 2 x 12 is strong in one direction, not the other, it will definitely bow over time, maybe not enough to blow the tank, but it would make me nervous. I would build the walls out of 2x4 and plywood, 16" on center just like a normal wall.

that is wicked! great idea, post more pics when you return form vacation!

I'll try to get some pics up tonight. I have 2 motoro females in there now. They DID NOT like the sand...it seemed to collect on their bodies and then slough off their slim coat in chunks. I removed the sand last night, did two major water changes (including stress coat and salt) and they are doing much better today. Their color is back and they are getting more active.

Again, I'll post a few pics tonight.

Here is female #1 - she is about 7".

Both seem to be doing better now that I removed the sand...good color and swimming better...now I just need to get them eating more regularly , fatten them up, and find a male.

Thanks for the update! The pond is dreamy. :)

Has the solid wood construction held up? I am caught between solid wood and plywood and stud construction. Also the pic are now gone and I was wondering if you had studs under the floor of the tank or was it just attached to the bottom of the outside frame?
