A lot of people recommend 3 cichlids (1m, 2fm) though to curve agression. If I end up with 2 males then im screwed though XD. And 3 males big no no.Personally I don't like having odd numbers of the cichlids, especially if some pair off

Yes i looked this up too. i know for sure neon tetras and pictus arent going to work. however, corydoras are armored catfish with the ability to lock their pectoral fins so the pictus catfish would be forced to spit it out. additionally some corydoras can exceed 3-5" in length so im going to look for them on the larger side. at least 2" is what im looking for. i took a brief look on planetcatfish and they said sterbai gets 2.4" which i believe could be just big enough to not be eaten. at least for the first few months hopefully. If not ill find a larger 1. i remember seeing a huge emerald cory thats was like 2-3" a few months ago at my lfs.I would be watchful of the pictus cats trying to eat anything that fits in their mouth and the congo tetras I had were murder on live plants.
Are they really that bad? looks at several sites... liveaquaria recommends they be kept with live plants. wikipedia says " Also, watch that they don't eat your smaller plants. They sometimes like to nibble on softer plants and young shoots." actual quote taken from the website. aquatic community says "The aquarium should be planted and provide many hiding places, but also contain open swimming area" aquahobby says "Keep them in a planted tank and they should thrive."Since you are determined, good luck with them but congo tetras were always sold as aquatic lawn mowers. They tore my tank up and it wasn't from lack of food. Got rid of them quick as did anyone else with a planted tank.
wikipedia says kuhli loaches get 4". I dont think 5" pictus catfish are likely to eat 4" fish. and im gonna buy everything at micro size. then grow them all together. that might help too. depending on what other people say i might not get congo tetras. I definitely will not get them if they eat live plants. But i probably will if they only nibble a bit and dont decimate the whole tank. You also listed kuhli loaches and oto cats. Both small enough for predatory catfish to try and eat. Otos have spines also that can get stuck in a fishes mouth.
I understand completely. Nobody is trying to start an arguement here. I am already considering the congo tetras. I have put them on hold because of this possibility. until i get more people with experiences around this matter i will not buy them. It would not be wise to base opinions off of 1 person no matter who they are, what they do, or who they talk to. this is a general consensus for me. it does not apply to any specific people but rather everybody.I did give you my experience with them, what you do with that advice is up to you. Not trying to tell anyone how to run their life or their tank, just making recommendations based on the questions posed.
