I dunno. The African butterflyfish have a lot of harmless spines that may make him not wanna eat them

I was referring to the senegals. They are really skinny compared to the butterfly fish. I got a 3-4" moke and it was pretty slim, like thinner than your pinky. I'm betting a 2-3" senegal is skinner. Since the fins on the butterfly tend to stick out more, they will look bigger to the bichir. It won't attempt eat something that looks too big.

One of my sens is 8" in the pic and the del is 3-4" ,he could've eaten the del pretty easily.It's still alive 2 months later.
