New sump and background for my 180

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Looking great as usual! Dammit now I got the itch again......may have to give in and do a background on my next one. Inspired!!

Thank you. I love the backgrounds. Fun to install and relaxing, for some reason, when I'm watching my fish......

Sump is done. This tank has an over flow on the left side and the two returns were plumbed up into the overflow for a total of 5 holes coming out the bottom of the over flow. I capped the returns that use to be Loc lines coming out of the side of the over flow then covered everything with the background. No goofy Loc lines will be branching out of my overflow. The new return is going to drop down from the top like a waterfall splashing into a river.

What to do with the 5 bulkheads coming out of the overflow?

I never complained about having extra drain capacity. So, I have a 4" drain line that I capped on both ends and it has a 2" T coming out of it going to the filter sock. I drilled 5 holes into the top of the drain line to match up with the 5 bulkhead fittings. Crossing fingers this works? Here's some pics:

Up late last night, I got the sump in and plumbed up. I had to raise the sump a bit 4" for the drain/trickle system to drain the sump into the yard. The pic of the back of the stand, the lower valve is the drain for the sump and the upper valve is the drain for the hole tank. I like to keep the drain for the whole tank inside the stand so it doesn't accidentally get opened but with the sump so high in the stand I didn't have room this time. Hopefully some little kid doesn't open it one day......

Some pre and post pics.

I moved my Aba aba back into the 180. He/She looks a lot smaller in this tank. The darker tank suits the Aba aba. The tank is running great, the trickle is functioning, I love the filter sock. The 55 gallon sump just barely fits under the stand but I like the extra capacity it adds. Total volume in the system is around 220 gallons. Hopefully this will support the Aba aba for a couple years.

Thanks for visiting this thread, it was a fun project!

Looks good. I don't understand how your trickle part could work. Your last baffle is so tall and keeps the water level so high that your bioballs would end up submerged and there'd be little trickle wet/dry going on.

In this case the "trickle system" describes incoming fresh water at one gallon per hour. Then one gallon of dirty water drains out my sump. 24 gallons a day 7 days a week...
