New sump and background for my 180

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ok, that's way too many tanks for simple viewing, when does the new petshop open. Great work!

Its the species only tanks that kill me. The Aba aba can't be trusted and gets huge! The Gulpers are cute and deadly! The Goonch with the colder water requirements coupled with an evil disposition.....that's 3 large tanks for just 7 fish total.
My wife just rolls her eyes when I say that :-)

Makes sense now. Thanks.

The way I look at it: the filters, no matter how powerful and efficient they operate, just set your water change intervals. If you have really good filters you may be able to do less water changes, but eventually a water change is required.

The trickle system allows me the extra room for my weak filter design. Submerged bio balls, low flow and so on.

My take on keeping fish in an aquarium is: Get as much water in your aquarium "system" as possible (large sumps). Maximize water changes.

Another advantage of the trickle is less stress to the fish. I change out massive amounts of water 1 gallon at a time. The fish don't notice. Back in the day I would do a 20% water change once a week and my Bala Sharks and Silver Dollars would slam into things, knock scales off, and so on. Week after week. Now they don't notice and I'm changing out way more water. Enough of my blabbing.

Thanks for reading :)

do you still preform gravel vacs on your tanks or do you have a some kind of under gravel system that keeps the poop buildup to a minimum? looking into a drip for my tanks and wasnt sure how gravel vacs factored into it

Yes unfortunately there's no way around gravel vacuuming. At least I haven't figured that out yet. I have made it a little easier. Having the large 1.5" main drain I was able to extend the drain to the front of my 450's stand. Pics below. I drop my gravel vac pipe into this drain and no buckets are needed.
The second valve on my incoming clean water line is connected to a hose to refill my tanks after gravel vacuuming. Again no buckets.
Can you tell I love plumbing :)

I can only imagine your wife's attitude, but I have to say she is a keeper, becasue she tolerates it.:) Nice set up's nonetheless, I like what you have done. Impressive system hook up with even more impressive species.
