Some super neat work there. Nicely done.

How big are you expecting this Aba to get and what is your next plan for him?

Hey Egon,

When your pump in your sump tank fails its gonna flood your room right since your drain pipe is drilled half way down the tank? how do you control it?

waiting for your reply :-)

Good question. When the pump fails, they all do eventually, the water starts to fill the sump. As the water fills the sump the 1" drain line is submerged and starts a full syphon. This full syphon coupled with the extra capacity of the sump keeps water from overflowing. I tested this by powering down the pump and watched. The only problem is after something like a power outage the pump won’t have enough water to get the flow started again. So I had to choose, water on the floor or not being able to auto start the pump. Fortunately here in Phoenix AZ I don’t have very many power outages. Pumps fail more often than losing power. I chose no water on my living room floor. Good questions keep em coming.

I'm pretty much addicted to you posts, reading it again and again now I pretty much got a clear picture of how freshwater sumps are made(Yeah it took time for me :D) I have a 120 gallon community tank with 2-5 inches of fishes what's your suggestion of making a freshwater sump for that ?
1. how many gallon sump tank should I choose for ?
2. How to control the drain pipe from the main aquarium to the sump to match the return pipe to the main aquarium?
3. Me being a beginner where should I start my first freshwater sump setup?

Thank you... :-)

I couldn't see the pic with the drain drilled half way down, but it does sound like trouble to me. I know you said you don't get power outages very often, but if one did happen while you were at work or on vacation the results wouldn't be good. I don't know how long the pump would run with not enough water to restart the system or how long the fish would last without filtration, but I know I wouldn't take the gamble (though I am out of town for weekends etc fairly frequently, not sure how often you're away from home). That aside, the tanks look great! I love the backgrounds and if it weren't for the plecs I'd certainly have installed on in my set up. Great idea with the siphon drain too. I've done the very same thing this time round, it's worth it's weight in gold!

Benin, as I said in your other thread; anyone could answer those questions for you, but if you research and learn how to design it yourself you'll be able to customise it to suit your needs exactly. Here are my answers...
1. As big as possible.

This is a link to my 120 thread. It goes into detail on the sump/trickle set up. The pic is an example of how all my sump drains are set up. I drill a hole in the side of the sump as low as possible then put a PVC elbow on the drain to set the waters height. It's very easy to set the water level this way. I run my trickle to the fish tank at 1 to 2 gallons an hour. This drains down to the sump and flows down the drain at exactly 1 to 2 gallons an hour. When I lose power the trickle still stays on and keeps a small flow (1 to 2 gallons an hour) from the tank down the over flow to the sump then down the drain in the sump out to my yard.

You are correct about power outages, If I lose power and it doesn't come back on, my fish die. If it does come back on and I'm not home in a day or so then my fish die because all the water to restart the sump went down the drain.

It’s the only way I could set it up and still have a trickle system.

It is what it is I guess.

1) As large as possible
2) You pump water up from the sump to the tank. Gravity returns the water to the sump. Cool huh? Auto matching :)
3) I like 55 gallon sumps because they are easy to get used. Check out my threads on how I set up the sumps but any container will do. Go with submersible pumps and you never have to drill holes.

That all makes sense, I've spent many hours trying to figure out how to run a trickle with my sump and avoid that very problem without having to have the sump full of water, and I can't figure out an elegant solution. In your case it is a very slim chance of it going wrong, you're probably more likely to win the lottery!
