New Tank. 300 Gallons!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I didn't. It still has a lot of crap in the bottom, dust, old substrate etc. I wanted to get that background out and clean it before I put water to it. Easier to get out dry sand than wet.

True. Also it would be filled to the top so the pressure can be applied to see if it can hold it. Acrylic are the best type of tanks.

I'm going to fill before I try to repair it to see if it holds. I am sure it will, but the tank is going in my house so I want a bit of insurance.

Just had a close call. Heard a splash, looked over and my aro had most of one of my smaller Nicaraguan cichlids in its mouth. Really need to get this tank done.

So between yesterday afternoon and this morning the tank has been cleaned out and filled. Holding water for now. I was dissapointed to find my 700gph sedra pump doesn't fit in the sump section. The tank came with a Rio2100 so I'll just grab another one of those. Only one side of the filter is working right now because the tank isn't level, but it works great. I figure I'll let the tank run for a few days in the garage while I get the stand finished up.

Figured I would give an update tonight. Just finished sanding with 1000 grit. Going to do 1500, 2000, then novus. The stand will be primed tomorrow, painted the next day and allowed to dry for a couple days while I finish the sanding. Hardware is going to be 2x eheim jager 300w heaters, 2x Rio 2100 pumps, 10 gallons of bio balls that came with the tank plus a gallon of matrix plus about 30 nylon shower scrubbies. So 600w total heating power, around 1200gph turnover, and more than enough bio for the load I am going to put on it. I am going to be breaking down my 75, and emptying my 60 for my flowerhorn. Final stock for the tank will be....

1X silver arowana
1X ornate bichir
1X Senegal bichir
1X bgk
1X bleekeri
2X Nicaraguan cichlids
1X electric blue acara
6X assorted loaches, mostly botia
3X angels
2X moonlight goruamis
1X sailfin pleco
1X mega clown pleco

A decent grab bag. Some of them may become some sort of meal over time, but that's to be expected. Also most of the fish are still juvies so I will have plenty of space. Should be up by the middle of next week, getting excited.

Trouble in paradise!!! I was looking around the tank this morning and found this chip in the bottom left corner. It's a little bigger than a quarter. I have some scrap acrylic sheets laying around and I think I could make a corner brace for it. My question is, could I use pvc cement to bond the acrylic?

Pvc cement is a no go with acrylic...
I would use Weldo 40 also...nothing less.
This is an amazing find....some people get all the luck!! Next stop, Vegas?

The tank is done!!! I finished with 1500 and 2000 grit yesterday plus 2 passes each with novus 3 and 2. Pics below are after 2K, after polishing, massive sandpaper pile, and tank before sanding. The stand is also primed and ready for paint this afternoon after work. I think I'm done buying acrylic tanks for now. I really don't want to do that whole process again. Ever.

Another update. Tank has been fully cleaned out, the stand has its last coat of paint drying, and hardware is on the way. I'm not a huge fan of the gloss finish of the paint I used and it certainly isn't pretty, I should have used a roller, but it will be waterproof. I have 2 eheim jager 300w heaters and another Rio2100 that will be here on Tuesday, and I'll get the tank setup Thursday or Friday. On another note, any of you mfk'rs in the San Diego area looking for a pre drilled acrylic 75? I'm going to empty it in to the new tank.
