New Tank & Baby Green Terror!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Going well! 90% water change, took everything out, scrubbed, and cleaned both filters = happy fish!

Second pic is the morning after it settled again!! I can’t get over how clear it stays now!

Filter is Aquaclear 110 with sponge on bottom, finer media pad in middle, and bio media on top + the large sponge filter in corner of tank! Working very well! I think on my larger tank I’ll simply add an additional Aquaclear 110 when I set it up!

Just an FYI, you do not need to scrub down articles of decor in the aquarium.
Those objects all contain beneficial bacteria, and much of the algae that grows on them is beneficial, in that it consumes deleterious substances like nitrate and phosphate. And scrubbing them down, can have a negative effect.
If you look at the areas in nature where your fish come live, these areas are not spotless, they are algae and beneficial bacteria covered.

Below is a video of a river, where in the last minute you can see an Andinoacara.

Understood and agreed - I have never scrubbed any décor inside the tank. Only the walls, that's what I meant by scrubbing! :-)

Some marimo balls would look cool in your setup. They soak up nitrates too.

On that same note, floating pothos (I like the look of Golden, but you can do whatever you want as long as it's safe) look great and act as another filter, same as moss balls.

Interesting! Never even heard of this! Can you drop a link to some you like? Any cool pics of examples? Googled it for a sec but haven’t looked too much into it yet, but looks neat for sure!

look on amazon or ebay under "live marimo balls". Some fish will nibble or shred them into pieces. You can actually take broken pieces and roll them up into balls again.
