There is also the African Cichlids that have species anywhere from 5" up.

In my humble opinion, that would be a great looking tank full of male Aulonocara's (Peacock's) and some Otopharynx lithobates. Plenty of color there :naughty:

Plants and most Africans don't do well because they will eat them down to the roots in no time at all. Sand is a great option since most of the fish will sift through and dig all day long in it. Be careful though putting rock in there because they will dig under them and the rocks can fall and crush your fish. I wouldn't advise driftwood because it softens the water and all the rift lake cichlids need a high PH of around 7.8-8.0 and higher. If you do go with Africans in that tank I would get some nice big Haps, like the Malawi sand diver 16" (Fossochromis rostratus) and its buddies the Blue Dolphin 9" (Cyrtocara moorii) and the Kabibi 8" (Protomelas annectens) the last two like to follow the Sand diver around when it kicks up the sand. There are so many different Cichlids from the rift lakes that you'll need to take a few aspirin before you start looking into them because your going to get a head ach trying to decide. Another popular fish are Frontosas from Lake Tanganyika which are really spectacular fish.
