New tank I need Ideas and help

I think the leave in tant testers are a load of crap. The strips give you a rough idea but if you're wanting a precise reading go with the drop style or even a probe.
Only because when I bought them you placed a little square paper "strip" on the card you stuck to the tank. But to me that makes no sense. If it's already saturated with water how will the testing chemicals not leak out? That and when I put it in my tank it didn't give the reading that I was getting from test strips as well as with the lfs probe.
I had an oscar and in his first year he was 10.5 inches long ..... for an oscar to be over a year and is 1.5 inches ?? something is seriously messed up , are you possitive that it is a oscar ? maybe it s ahybrid !! that it they crossed an oscar with a neon !!!
