New tank owner looking to upgrade

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I got a tracking number but when I went to put it in the site was weird saying the number doesn't exist, and it pulled up an option to go to something involving China. At the end of the day I'm getting my card replaced and taking the L, 70usd isn't the end of the world and if it doesn't arrive in 30 days I can contact them about a refund. Whether I get one or not, I don't care too much. I consider this a lesson learned that if it seems too good to be true it probably is. I thought maybe it was a used tank someone was just trying to get rid of, but that's unlikely considering how much they cost.
You could most likely dispute the charges after 30-40 days and get the charge reversed

The good news is that I'll easily be able to afford a 55 gallon tank from petsmart so that my BGK Bob, also referred to as Bobby, Bobert, and Bobathan, will be able to grow comfortably and I'll be saving up for a proper sized tank.

My partner is interested in a member of the birchir family, he says it's commonly referred to as a dinosaur birchir or grey birchir. For now we picked up a spotted loach from the local fish store and named him Greg, like from the Wiggles (get it, because he wiggles). I'm thinking of getting some clown loaches like my dad had in his tank.

I don’t know your situation but some aquarium dealers have financing options, sometimes no interest if paid in full by a certain point

My partner and I make enough money to live comfortably, enjoy our hobbies, and save up. His main concern with getting our "end goal" tank is that we don't plan on staying in this apartment for longer than the lease and he doesn't know if he'd like to stay here or look for a job in another state. I feel we can figure it out as we go, as you can tell already I'm more than a little impulsive but that's what my 20's are for. I'll be keeping an eye out for nice big tanks!

Keep an eye on closing down doctor's offices, dentists, restaurants, or pediatricians. They just might be able to give you a very large display tank for a very reasonable price, since they often need rid of it.

By the way, here's one more piece of advice: I'd recommend staying away from getting a bichir.
Not just because of the previously outlined possibility of it attacking the knifefish, but the possibility that things are probably not going to end well for your weather loach and pictus catfish if you get a bichir (as per my signature).
You probably don't hold the same views on bichirs that I do, but I think you'll agree that you, your knifefish, your loach, and your catfish would all be better off without seeing or experiencing what a hungry bichir would do to them.

I’m going to disagree. I would avoid larger more aggressive bichirs like endis or ornates, but smaller types like sens or docile types like Delhezi will be fine

Aggression and size are not the concern here, it's appetite. I have seen at least one account here on MonsterFishKeepers of a Senegal bichir trying to eat a pictus catfish and dying in the process, while a weather loach (which would probably get friendly with them because of the similar shape) would be at a very high risk of either getting swallowed down or getting chunks bitten out by a hungry bichir, no matter the species.
No matter how small or peaceful they may be, when capable predatory fish get hungry there is no stopping them. This is why I suspect getting a bichir won't end well.

I meant aggressive eating when I said aggressive. Sens are one of the more aggressive eaters from my experience but their size makes them usually ok. I’ve kept them with many fish without issue. He just needs to make sure the sizes are right. I had a Delhezi for 3 years and he was a very docile eater and I had to cut his food up very small. So if he wants a bichir, I think the odds are very good everything will be fine, but there’s no guarantees. I kept a 6” pim blochi with a 14” endi and the pim would chase the endi out it’s cave. Ropefish would be another bichir option I’m comfortable recommending

One thing that should be mentioned is weather loaches prefer cooler temps so if it were me I’d rehome that and replace it with the bichir
