New tank soon, sand or bare bottom?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Right on, ill definatly have a look at pool filter sand then, theres 2 pool places around my area I can check out. Also reguarding the ray I was looking at the hystrix, as they stay smaller. Im only interested in keeping 4 large fish in the new tank (2 I already have, then a florida gar and possibly the ray), pretty much just my favorites. Plus I dont want to over due the bioload produced from them.

Can anyone recommend a good brand to use? Something ray friendly? If I do decide to pick one up.

Cool, we have to open up our pool soon for the summer, we need chemicals anyways so ill take a look at the sand while im there. So I guess im gonna go with sand on the new tank lol thanks everyone.

I think you will do well with the sand if you get a ray. I would also suggest checking out the ray forum if you haven't already. Maybe you know all about them already...I don't know...but there is a lot of good info there. Like anything, they require their own special care and it's a little bit of work.

Sure thing ;) You might have to ask them to open a bag for you to see it, that's what I had to do, because mine came in a big brown bag that you couldn't see the sand in.
Good luck!

When I ordered my red flint sand for my 180g I did it without seeing it first. Kind of a gamble...I know. It basically looks like regular sand but with slightly bigger granules. So when I set up my 360g I'm going to do some comparisons. I'm in no big hurry though. I might sell the 360 and build a 450 instead. In either tank I probably would like to not spend the money for red flink vs. pool gravel if it looks similar.

Thanks fook. I was reading up on the ray stickies earlier today. Im fine with putting in the little extra time and care for a ray. I really want a good "wow" factor on this tank. A ray in freshwater, especially here in canada always impresses people. Plus it gives me an excuse to get some alone time away from the girlfriend hahaha. Shes not big on the aquarium hobby.

i have had stones, gravel and sand, and now am slowly converting all of my unplanted tanks to bare bottom, its just a lot easier to maintain especially if you have multiple tanks. If you have only one tank, and have fish that do prefer a substrate then by all means go with pool filter sand.
