Every wolf I've had has ignored polys completely, only fish my curupira lets push him around now, he's even been bitten by my ornate by accident of course and still decided to try and defend him from me, I have a thread on it in the other characin sub forum, i took pictures of him swimming all the way across the tank with his gills flared to defend the ornate, he only does it with the ornate though. someone else said their wolf does the same and defends their bichirs, like perfect guard dogs for your bichirs lol. My odoe follows my bichirs when they're swimming lol, he used to like test bite them when they'd go up for air, but he hasn't done that in a while and it never left a mark so he didn't bite them hard. Might be something you want to look out for if you mind it.
And researching is always just as fun imo, you learn all the different possibilities and it gets your mind thinking about what different combinations you wanna try and what outcomes can be etc. Also, ornates are beautiful, but teugelsi is beautiful too, and then after keeping my weeksii, I don't know if I'd wanna go without him, he's active and his head proportioned to his body looks bigger than all other bichirs, I have a male lap that is slightly longer TL, and thicker, but the weeksii head is bigger in length and girth. It just an interesting sight, and honestly keeping one makes me want a congicus, not that I plan on getting one I don't have adequate space, but it's like a LJ version of the weeksii because, imo, the striping remind me of one another. Some other ideas for tank mates are catfishes that get around 1-1.5' would be good as well. It all depends what you're interested in and your taste, after all you'll be the one looking at it everyday lol
