hi i'm trying to buy a texas myself. Do you guys know if these fish are "characters" like an oscar? or how they usually behave?

They have lots of personality, but more aggressive. Mine will try and bite me when I get close to the tank. They aren't shy, and they are very interested in what is going on out side the tank. They are extremely territorial, and I wouldn't keep tank mates unless you have a very large tank. My texas at 7'' almost killed my 13'' oscar.
 
The best carpintis I've seen so far(I mean carpintis here, no escondidos or cyanos), I wish my lil rascal turns out just like him.
I herd they slow down a lot after 8"(sometimes stop growing also), is it true?
I like to see him at 12+" mark ASAP....goodluck mate!

I havent seen any carpintis more than 10" till date.
