NEW TO AFRICANS. Would like some advise?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
While I don't advise mixing Africans with South American cichlids. I think if I had to make a choice I would pick some sort of malawi hap. They would be a bit bigger and not have the diet issues. They would still prefer different water and may not handle the aggression of a South AMerican cichlid.

lol.i laugh at the fact that ive kept mbuna with s.a fish with no problems for years.whats wrong with feeding live foods too mbuna?really most of you people are wayy too anal about these things.none of my fish have ever had bloat.i keep tangs with malawis and vics.all ina 150 gallon aquarium theyre not juvies i feed the same thing.flake pellets and live.if they eat it then great.like he said water at most farms or facilities are not what the lakes have.im 99%sure petsmart does nto have a side where the p.h is 9.0 for tangs.8.0 for malawi and 6.5 for s.a or discus.at most they keep it neutral at 7.0 please people lets not be so naive.depending on what fish you have those fish may not be compatible.they are aggressive species theres a few you can get that are less aggressive.

I'm not sure why ppl ask for advice then attack each other when the opinions are not what they wanted to hear. The hypocrisy in this thread is staggering. "Flaming" is what gives open forum sites bad reps.

There are tons of ppl whom house Africans and New Worlds in the same tank. More often then not this combo does not work for long periods of time. In 75 gal. most New World Cichlids get to large to even be housed singularly for life in this volume of water, however there has been no mention of the stock. 75 gal. is however prime for Mbunas.

1. Drop the flaming or infractions will follow.

2. Stop saying petco keeps, or fish store keeps. They also put 400 fish in a 30 gallon. It is a temp holding tank. Plus most fish stores do keep them in different ph... wonder why petco and petsmart and most pet stores have people remove dead fish all day. We are making perm. homes for our fish. Saying but petco or fish stores does, is like say well they ship fish in bags for Africa, so I can keep my fish in a bag in my living room. No you can't (and fish live).

3. Yes mixing fish is not a good plan, does it work some times yes. Often no... Feel free to share you experiences, but remember people new to fish keeping read your posts as well.

4. Share all the information people! What is the stock list, tank size, filtration, and etc.

5. Get along...
