A pair should be OK, if your after a pair get six juvies and let two pair naturally then sell the others off that way you stand more chance of getting a compatible pair.

They prefer a group, but your tank won't really be large enough to keep a group long-term.
I would look guianacara, perhaps geopahgus redhead Tapajos, if you like the geophagus. Steindachneri also are quite nice looking. These smaller species, you could probably do a small group, and also have some other dither fish as well.
A group of Thorichthys species would work well in that size tank as well.
I actually really like the firemouths, some of my favorites. How many of them would be ok?
I have a 55 gallon with angels and some tetras so I'm not really looking for any types of those fish in this 75
5 or 6 would be a good sized group in my opinion
