I'll definitely keep that in mind when looking for tankmates, would you suggest adding them to the tank before or after the arowana?

Your best bet with a black or silver aro is no tankmates if 6" or under. After that a few non aggressive select tankmates can be added.

Once it gets to be 12" it will do fine with most any cichlids or cichla, though it is a good idea to keep them cichlids to 1/2 the length of the aro at this point.

At 18-20" the arowana will have enough body mass to deal with most any sized tank mates. Though with RTCs there have been a couple members to lose aros of this size to the cats of the same length.

Datnoids would be a good addition :). Just make sure they aren't bite size and you're golden.

If you don't want to handle the length of a silver or black, maybe something in the Australian family? I have a Jardini myself and they're pretty fun to watch. Leichardti's are beautiful, but can get up there in pricing.

Never been a big fan of Catfish, they poo quite a bit and will muck up the water.

Maybe a Bichir if you've ever thought of those?

I plan on getting one around 6" to start with so I'll definitely take your advice and hold off on more aggressive tankmates until it gets larger in size. Thanks!

Those are two great suggestions. I had thought of bichirs but I didn't even think of datnoids, they are beautiful fish too!:)

I agree with the above posts - keep the arowana alone until it reaches a larger size. Might I suggest a ck (clown knife) or variation thereof (bgk, royal ck) as a tankmate for your aro?

I have a 5" ornate bichir with my 7.5" silver and they get along great. But i wont add anything else till the arow reaches 10"+... but i do plan to add a gar and bgk and another bichir and maybe an oscar or JD tottally depends on what advice i get from other people who have had much more exp with arowanas as this is my first and they have helped me a lot like sbuse and Bderick. But they are peaceful to watch puts me to sleep everynight.. mine eats FD plankton and blood worms, hikiari arowana pellets and massivore.. I love my silvers colouring very nice fish but i like blacks better or even africans i like. But pbass go good with them i hear also. Just puttin my 2 cents in and i hope you enjoy your new arowana and post LOTS of pics when you get one..listen to many of the people on here with lots of exp with arowanas they know a lot about them!

chris :)

Yeah I realized they got pretty massive and plan to save up for something larger for them a little later down the road, but thanks for the tip! I understand they are pretty particular about water conditions would around a PH of 7.0 be a safe bet?

I wouldn't recommend controlling the pH (with chemical additives), but only try to stabilize the environment conditions as much as you can. I'm sure you already knew that after these years in the hobby. Good luck and post pics of your new aro's.
