Once it gets to be 12" it will do fine with most any cichlids or cichla, though it is a good idea to keep them cichlids to 1/2 the length of the aro at this point.
At 18-20" the arowana will have enough body mass to deal with most any sized tank mates. Though with RTCs there have been a couple members to lose aros of this size to the cats of the same length.

If you don't want to handle the length of a silver or black, maybe something in the Australian family? I have a Jardini myself and they're pretty fun to watch. Leichardti's are beautiful, but can get up there in pricing.
Never been a big fan of Catfish, they poo quite a bit and will muck up the water.
Maybe a Bichir if you've ever thought of those?
