This is another site with a pretty good gallery section. it includes numerous SA/CA cichlids, African cichlids and many other fish you may need to look at as well. For a clean up crew for example

have a look through these and you're bound to find a few you'll be interested in: http://www.aquahobby.com/e_gallery.php

these guys have given you lots of good advice.

i'd like to know what you are looking for in the fish you want to keep. Do you want fish that are aggressive, are you looking for something that is just nice looking and not very big. A 30 gallon tank does give you some options.

You can start out with a mixed tetra, gourami community tank, put some Cori's in there as well.

Or you can go with a mixed African Cichlid tank. As for the people saying the africans are not aggressive, I beg to differ. They are very aggressive, but you can put alot more fish in the tank with them. Possibly 5-6 africans in a 30 would look nice with a rock set up, do your research. Find out what interests you, then you will be better prepared to ask questions.

ok but i dont think i can get a bigger tank

Well then just make sure you research whatever fish you want to get and make sure you can properly house it for life. There are lots of great species that can fit in a 30g.

A breeding pair of convicts would work nicely in that tank with some dithers. When i first started out i got cons and they taught me a lot and they are very interesting fish. But listen to what the other members are saying, do research, and make sure you have the proper tank size for the species. You will come to enjoy cichlids alot. Good Luck.

Con's are still a great first option. Through in some Zebra Diano's and possibly a small cat fish, that would make a nice set up. Teach you alot and definitely get you into the act of fish keeping.

If you have other questions, please post them, we are not going to make you feel small for asking questions, everyone starts off somewhere.

but what do you want a fish that look good or an aggressvie one that kills every thing or one that will breed or nice cichlids that can be kept with other fish that will help us

Convicts are a great starter cichlid, easy to breed and care for. Fun to watch, aggressive and you don't have to worry about the conditions of the water as much as African Cichlids, which are a lot of fun, but more work!!
