New to DIY plywood build. A question.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I dont think you want to fiberglass and then top that off with Blue Max/Sweetwater. Blue Max or Sweetwater or even Pond Armor will do the trick w/o fiberglassing underneath. Many builds using these products have put down cement board first to give these products something to bond to but I have seen builds where these products are put directly on the plywood.

Thanks everyone. We were doing a little bit of research last night and I think we are just going to use fiberglass and resin on the whole thing. Applied directly to the wood. It seems a lot easier (a little more expensive) than worrying about if theing are going to stick together or not. We will be sure to make a frame for the glass so it doesn't bust out. And yes, we are going to fill it outside first and let it sit for a couple of days with water in it to make sure it is functioning. Thanks everyone! Imput on the new and improved idea would be greatly apreciated also!

Why don't you want fiberglass under Blue Max? The fiberglass adds structural support and waterproofing and the coating just seals everything tight.

I wish I could do the same thing. With my tank height of 4 ft I'd never be able to get through the door. :D

Well we will be building it at my dads house outside. But to get in into our apartment we are going to have to take out a window. Lol. Luckily my boyfriend installs windows for a living :D

Wasn't thinking of the fiberglass providing structural support, I was just thinking about it being water tight. My bad!

Wow, you must live in a lower unit. I can't believe the apartment managers would like somebody having a huge tank in there.

Oh they don't LIKE it at all lol. We actually had our 250gal up on the 3rd floor and hid it from them for a couple of months. They came in to do maintence and everything and we hid the damn thing. Put a blanket over it and stacked all of our furniture around it, haha, it was crazy. But they finally caught us when a neighbor ratted on us. It wasn't even the people below us! :screwy: But they moved us to a lower unit, right next to the office now :grinno: Atleast they didn't kick us out!

You realize with that much weight something below will start to sag very quickly. When your neighbor below notices cracks in the ceiling drywall I'm sure the super will come knocking....

I guess you guys are really dedicated MFK's. :headbang2

Well we made sure the floor trusses we running the right way (the opposite way that the tank is going to be sitting) So we were pretty confident nothing was going to happen. But right before we got moved we were draining some water out of the tank and we through the syphon tube out onto the porch and without us knowing it swung back around and landed right on the sliding glass door track. The people below us came knocking about an hour later saything they had a waterfall coming down onto their sliding glass door. haha... luckily for us they were cool and didn't tell the apartments :D
